![]() ![]() Apparently, Fellini was recovering from an illness or accident and started reading the incomplete works of Petronius and this inspired him to make Satyricon. The vignettes sometimes transition well between them and sometimes just end and then start again with the characters now in a different place and having progressed in their adventures. This is shown as a series of vignettes that are all tied together through the life of Encolpio but with very few transitional elements we take for granted in storytelling. I also have to mention the narrative structure. And it’s not just the main characters, essentially every character here responds to every sexual whim and embraces the full promise of hedonism. Probably historically accurate to the 1st century AD, but a version of that culture very rarely represented on screen. This is a movie made in 1969 that celebrates love and passion without regard to gender or identity. They commonly share women, each other and call each other brothers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Encolpio also has a frenemy, Ascilto, who laughs at him half the time but also comes to his rescue and joins him on every quest. But that is where any sense of expectation and normalcy ends.įor one, the characters are all pansexual, and Giton is a young boy who is an object of desire to most of the men in the story. The hero here is Encolpio, and we follow him as he fights for his love Giton, gets captured as a slave, goes on several adventures, fights a minotaur, loses and regains his virility and ultimately escapes to the far reaches of Roman territory. Specifically, I believe Satyricon transcends what most films are capable of and is the type of beautiful, chaotic, indulgent tapestry that very few directors can pull off. I was trying to find a word to describe how it felt watching Satyricon and the best I can do is to say that it was the closest thing to a transcendent experience I have had at the movies. I was completely glued to the screen and loved every bit of this 2-hour piece of art that expands what is possible through film. I can say that I definitely loved Satyricon. This is definitely an intimidating film to try and write about.Īs is often the case with the more sophisticated and expertly crafted cinema I see, I would like to try and break this down into digestible parts because I am wholly unqualified to speak about this piece of modern art beyond that.
